Images of Thassos
A few words about the island….
Thassos is so rich it is made of marble.
It is rich in history, rich in culture, rich in landscape and
rich in hospitality.
It has a sense of time and place out of step with the rest of
the world. There life moves on apace, in Thassos it remains
timeless, almost unchanging.
Shady tavernas on hot afternoons, limitless warm blue sea,
green, forested, marble-topped mountains, the sun sinking into
the Aegean. And a warmth that comes not only from the sun.

Get to know Thassos by thinking of it as a clock face. At 1
o’clock lies Limenas, or Thassos town, which is the small
but lively capital of the island and one of the two ferry ports.
The town is full of evidence of Ancient Greece with remains
at every turn, beautifully visible at the Agora and the amphitheatre.
At 2 and 3 o’clock are the wonderful beaches around Scala
Potamia. Stand in the clear, warm, shallow waters with fantastic
views to Mount Ipsarion.

Travelling clockwise round the southern coast gives glimpses
of deserted coves and beaches at every turn. At 7 o’clock
is Limenaria, a lovely, small town bursting with tavernas and
surrounded by quiet olive groves.

Nine and 10 o’clock take us to Scala Kallarachi and the
second ferry port, Prinos, before returning to Limenas around
the top of the island.

But that’s just the start – many of the jewels
of Thassos are not on the coast. The wooded heights of Ipsarion
reach over 1200 metres and its slopes are studded with beautiful
old hill villages tucked away from marauding pirates of yesteryear.
Panagia - with houses so close that families could escape by
leaping across roof-tops – pretty Maries, and the wonderfully
sleepy Theologos which literally means ‘Word of God’
are but three of these.
The forests, the mountains, the sea and the sky – Thassos
is truly the emerald of the Aegean!
But a word of warning – however long your stay –
it won’t be long enough!
